the train horn needs a protective flip up cover over the button. otherwise I’d accidentally hit it while attempting the polite beep beep

This is a commercial opportunity. Seems perfect for a kickstarter.

If you want a truly effective horn, get one that sounds like a 4.7L V8 attached to a Borla exhaust. That’s what I use as a horn on my car and I swear it’s easily 1000x more likely to get someone who can’t make up their mind to do so quickly by replacing their initial worry (turn here? turn there?) to something more motivated by a sense of self preservation.

Is it obnoxious? Sure, but not as obnoxious as going to the lengths to wiring up a train horn to blow at kids crossing the street or having a cute little double beep to let the whole world know the light has just turned green or any other occasion where two seconds of patience would work just as well.

I like the DIY vibe of the video, however. It’s well filmed and produced.

I’ve sat at lights many times with a line of cars, only to have car #3 not pay attention, far enough back that they aren’t on the sensors. By the time they move the light has decided “No sensed cars means no cars!” and turns yellow, only having enough time for car #3 to make it through and screwing over cars 4-12.

That’s an occasion where two seconds of patience turns into a 45 second delay. I’m not talking about that — that is a perfectly good time to blow your horn. I’m talking about the people who blow it literally before anyone even has a chance to react to it. New York City springs to mind.

If the person in front of me needs to finish sending their text before noticing the green light, an angry V8 at redline anecdotally seems to work a lot better than a beep. They know they’re holding you up and simply don’t care. When they suddenly think something is about to affect them, they show a lot more interest.

Try a 5 minute light cycle. And since those 8 cars don’t make it through? That means 8 more don’t make it through the next since those 8 cars had to go through first. So that one person really screws over about 100 cars until the traffic dies down enough for the light to actually catch up. Luckily, most cars are johnny on the spot during that time of the day.
